Fall Fun With Your Puppy: A Seasonal Bucket List
Fall Fun With Your Puppy: A Seasonal Bucket List
Crunchy leaves, cooler air, and golden light make fall one of the best seasons to be outside with a puppy, and with the summer heat gone there is plenty to explore. Here are six ways to enjoy the season together, so pick the ones that suit your puppy's personality.
Play in the Leaves
A fresh pile of leaves is a puppy playground, so rake a pile in your own yard where you can check it for sticks, sharp objects, and wet patches of mold first. Younger puppies may be startled by the crunch at first, so let them take their time, then let them sniff, dig, and pounce while you keep an eye out for acorns and mushrooms and call your puppy away from anything that looks edible.
Visit a Pumpkin Patch or Orchard
Many farms welcome dogs on a leash, so call ahead to confirm the rules and ask your veterinarian whether your puppy has finished the vaccines needed for public outings. Keep your puppy close in crowds, since hay bales and corn mazes can be overwhelming and farm animals may be nearby. A few fall snacks are safe in small amounts, including plain pumpkin and apple slices with the core and seeds removed, but skip anything sweetened or spiced.
Take a Cooler-Weather Hike
Fall temperatures are ideal for a longer walk, so choose a trail that matches your puppy's age and stamina, keeping the route short and taking breaks for younger puppies who tire quickly. Dress for the weather and leave extra time, because puppies love to stop and sniff, and bring water for both of you. Check your puppy for ticks after every outing, since fall is an active season for them.
Plan a Cozy Training Night
As the days get shorter, make your evenings count by practicing a new trick, playing a scent game, or setting up a simple obstacle course in the living room. Short sessions with treats keep your puppy engaged, and rotating games keeps each night feeling new, so try a cardboard box with treats inside as a free puzzle. Finish each night with calm cuddles to help your puppy settle down.
Capture Your Fall Photos
Fall light is soft and warm, so take your puppy outside near sunset and let them explore, bringing treats to hold their attention. Photo sessions work best after a walk, when your puppy is calm, and if you try a costume or a scarf, keep it comfortable and take it off as soon as the photo is done.
Share the Season With Friends
Fall is a great time for a puppy playdate, so invite a friend with a vaccinated dog to a fenced yard and let the puppies play, watching body language and taking breaks if either dog seems overwhelmed.
